Was my parrot ill drom the breeder?

by kerry
(worcestershire)

I bought a 14 week old Indian ringneck last sat. He died suddenley 4 days later. The bird had runny stools the whole time i had him and did't eat for the first day. He seemed ok though and would come out his cage and fly around. I notced on the 3rd day that he would always have his feathers fluffed up and on the 4th day he didn't want to come out his cage, he just slep't fluffed all day. When i looked around, he was hanging on with one foot and was dead, upside down.

I think I was conned and can't get hold of the breeder at all, I don't know where he lives, and his mobile is perm switched off. Does it sound like the bird was ill from the breeder and why would he still be hanging upside down when dead? Did he have a stroke? I looked after him well and knew about fumes/toxic things. I couldn't afford an autopsy. I am devestated.

Sick parrot died
by: Tracie

Yes, your bird was sick from the beginning. In the future, do NOT purchase birds from anyone without visiting their facility. If they do not take their birds to an avian vet, then do not purchase from them, because their birds are likely sick.

A reputable breeder will have a certificate of good health from the avian vet to prove that they have taken the bird, and the parents, to the vet. If the parents are not strong and healthy, they will produce weak, sickly offspring.

You get what you pay for, you can save money purchasing from backyard breeders that are just in it for the money, or you can pay more to a breeder that pays to have their birds seen by an avian vet and only sells healthy birds.

I am really sorry this happened to you. I know you didn't know all this before. I didn't know this stuff for years and kept having birds die, sometimes because of me because I didn't feed quality pellets, I feed them seed or colored pellets and put vitamins in the water.
