was my parrot too young when he was taken from his mother

i bought my african grey 4 months ago and he has been very sick twice since. the vet weighed him the other day and said he was very small for his age(the pet shop owner said he was 4mts when i bought him, which would make him 8mts now) but he was not malnurished. i rang the pet shop to find out about the breeder but the owner wouldnt tell me anything. could you tell me what age should a parrot be before he is taken from his mother please? i love my parrot to bits, and wouldnt swap him for the world but now i am very worried about him.

African Grey weaning

It may be that your bird was not hand raised properly. It could have been the quality of the hand feeding diet, or the techniques by which he was raised. All of these things, and others, will dictate the health of the baby after it weans. Normally breeders will take babies from the nest when they are 2-4 weeks old. Then the hand feeders raise them until weaning, which for an African Grey Congo is 12-13 weeks of age. You need to go see and avian veterinarian to make sure your bird is healthy.

You should also make sure you are feeding Harrison's pellets so your bird is nutritionally sound.
