What are the symptoms of Rosy Bourke egg-binding

by Cindy

My Rosy bourke is a 2 year old female. I have no other parakeets. She is acting as if she is going to lay an egg - but I do not feel one. She is spending an unusual amount of time in her house - laying down.

Her feces is normal color but somewhat runny. Her tail bobs a lot up and down. She does come out to eat and drink; and, she is somewhat active when she is not in her house.

She has never layed an egg and I do not know what symptoms to look for in identifying if she is possibly egg bound.
Thank you.

Symptoms of egg binding
by: Tracie

1) Your bird may sit on the bottom of the cage, tent or even a food bowl for a long period of time. Often she will look puffed and make noises like she is uncomfortable, but not always.

2) She may contract her stomach area and pant or breathe heavily. This is a sure sign that she is in trouble.

3) If your bird is swollen in her vent area for a long period of time, she may be having a hard time passing the egg.

4) Your bird will pass her droppings less frequently and when she does poop she will have a large dropping. If this goes on for days, then your bird is in trouble.

It is imperative that your bird be on a good pellet diet, like Harrison's, to help prevent egg binding. Please read our article on Chronic Egg Laying to learn more about helping birds that lay eggs, even though this is not the problem your bird is experiencing.

If you think your bird is having a hard time passing an egg, then you need to get your bird to an avian vet ASAP. The pressure on their organs will kill them.
