what causes lumps to form around my bare eyed cockatoos vent

by John
(St. Marys. Georgia USA)

We have owned our bare eyed cockatoo for over ten years. He has always been very healthy and active. He eats well and enjoys seeds, nuts, fruits, breads, crackers, and sometimes Harrison's pellets.

He is a rescue bird that suffered high levels of trauma inflicted by previous owners.

Now only a few loud noises from the outside world upsets him. He has chosen my wife as his favorite and will do anything she asks.

I have assumed the role of kitchen staff, wait staff, protector, and buddy when my wife is not at home.
His feathers are full, clean and healthy looking.

He lets my wife assist with his feather grooming bathing tasks.

Recently, (About two weeks ago), we noticed a couple of small lumps around his vent and the loss of several feathers.

Within the last two weeks the lumps grew larger and several new ones appeared. He is much more uncomfortable and seems to experience some pain. We are very concerned with the speed and growth of these lumps.

Please help. We are willing to travel from St. Marys Georgia to obtain your services or to utilize your referrals to other experienced Avian Vets, or your recommendations of owner treatments, medications, or other ways to cure our cockatoo.
Thank you for your professionalism and assistance.

Lumps around cockatoo vent
by: The Avian Vet

Sometimes eats Harrison's? Does he eat 80% Harrison's? If not, then he is not eating enough pellets. If he is eating lots of seeds and nuts, the growths could be fat, but usually they do not grow so quickly.

These lumps could be lipomas (fat tumors), Herpese virus, Papillomavirus, Papillomatosis, prolapse, or other issues.

I or someone needs to examine your bird. Make an appointment as soon as possible. I am happy to are your bird. You can also search the Find an Avian Vet page for a boarded veterinarian in your area. I know of one near Atlanta, Dr. Shepard. Heard good and bad, as with most veterinarians.

You can wait for Dr. B to answer your question or you can make an appointment to see him now or find another Avian Vet right away. These lumps are not slow growing tumors and are something very bad going on with your bird. You really have no time to wait and you cannot treat bird with any over the counter remedies, meds from pet stores or herbs. Until you know what has caused these lumps and what they are, your bird cannot be treated.

So, get an appointment and get your bird examined as quickly as you can. Time wasted here can mean the difference between life and death for your bird.

It sounds like you love him very, very much, so get him to an Avian Vet quickly.

Let us know what avian vet has to say because your information can help someone else.

Thanks Much for writing and God's Speed in getting your little friend well.
