Sick Bird
by: Linda

Your bird is sick, and you need to make an appointment with an Avian vet in your area immediately. As for the cage bird is in, if you did not scour it out with a bird safe disinfectant before putting your new bird in it, he probably has what the other one died from. Symptoms of the same disease can show up differently at first. Since you did not have a necropsy done on the dead bird, you have no idea what it died from. Any perches, playtops, toys--basically anything the other bird touched will need to be disinfected. There is a product that is safe to use around birds, and I've been using it for about 20 years. It is called VANODINE V18 and is a denatured iodine product. You add one teaspoon to a gallon of water, and it kills everything that bleach kills plus a few more without harming your birds or the environment. Of course, you cannot spray it on birds as the iodine will hurt their eyes and dry their skin. It is used as a cleaner and surfectant and works very well. We use it to wash dog's and birds dishes as well as for other cleaning jobs. You can use it anywhere you would use bleach, and it is not dangerous like bleach.

You can find the VANODINE V18 by doing a search on the internet, and it has a 2 year shelf life, and comes in 8 and 16 ounce bottles--you'll want the smaller one.

So, get your bird to vet as quickly as you can and before he is put back into cage, make sure you have disinfected it, perches and toys thoroughly with a bird-safe disinfectant (NOT BLEACH AS BLEACH IS DANGEROUS TO USE AROUND BIRDS FOR ANY REASON). I don't think the Vanodine V18 is sold in stores, but you could call around to make sure. It may be in Florida since Florida is one of the bird breeding capitals of the US.

Keep us posted and thanks for writing.
