what killed my budgie?

by Mindy

I noticed a few weeks ago my budgie was "puffing" out a lot. Since we had a cold front go through my air was running more so I moved him from the vent and he started to act fine. Three days ago he puffed himself back up I noticed his beak was flaking and his poop/urine was a bright yellow. He had stopped chirping but was still eating. Last night he was walking/stumbling around the cage trying to get in a corner. This morning he was dead what could of he died from?

what killed my budgie?
by: Linda

Just a quick comment that may save another bird's life. Do not put birds anywhere near an air vent either under or over one because these create a draft which always kills birds whether it is warm air or cold. Keep them completely away from all air vents.Birds can be drafted even sitting in a room with windows open on two sides of the room, so keep in mind drafts kill, and you'll be okay.I'm not saying that's what happened here, but it didn't help.

Why did budgie die?
by: Tracie

Sorry for your loss.
There is no telling without a necropsy. You can take your budgie to an avian vet for a necropsy if you really want to know and this is suggested if you have other birds to make sure it was not a disease.

Unfortunately most budgie owners I have met do not even know that they are not supposed to feed their birds an all seed diet, or not feed them foods that have chemicals in them. If you fed your bird 70% high quality pellets like Harrison's or Roudybush pellets then it was not diet related. If you did not know about pellets, or fed colored pellets that are full of chemicals and even sugar, then it could have been diet related.

Don't beat yourself up about it if you did not know about pellets and healthy bird diets. I did not know either when I had my first parrots and I killed them with both diet and adding vitamins to their water.
