Macaw picking feathers
by: Tracie

As best I can tell, what you are seeing is the bird's crop. That is why it comes and goes, because it fills with food and then disappears.

You should have this bird examined by an avian vet, because the feather picking could be from something internally going on, not just a behavioral issue.

Find an Avian Vet

Also, please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article that the avian vet wrote. He can't help your bird over the Internet, because he can't examine your bird or run any tests.

Sometimes the food people feed their birds cause feather picking, so make sure that you are not feeding your bird table food or cheap pellets like ZuPreem or Lefeber's nutriberries. Please read the articles on our Parrot Training page about nutrition and switching to pellets for more information.

I am glad you rescued this poor bird, and I hope it gets better due to your great care. :-)
