What should a 4 day old eclectus chick's tummy look like?

by Sharon

I have a 4 day old eclectus chick that I am handfeeding with Kaytee Exact formula. He had a biggish tummy when he hatched which was the yolk in his tummy, I assumed anyway, and he looked like any other newly hatched eclectus chick that I have seen so I wasn't worried.

He has been eating ok with a spoon with turned up sides and he eats then goes to sleep in his brooder and then wakes up for more food when his crop is empty which is about 2 to 3 hours after each feed. He goes a bit longer at night between feeds, about 3 and a half to 4 hours.

Anyway this morning I fed him and I noticed that his tummy was round and fat and the skin looked a bit tight. I have been looking all over the internet for pictures and info about what a 4 day old chick's tummy should like and I can't find anything. I found a youtube video of a woman feeding a 5 day old eclectus but her hands were in the way of the chick all the way through the video so I couldn't see anything. She should have titled the video '' Woman's Hands with a syringe'' Not ''Feeding 5 day old eclectus chick''.
Anyway does his tummy sound normal for his age?

Thanks for reading.

To Katy re eclectus chick tummy.
by: Sharon

Hey Katy, I'm Sharon the original poster . Only just saw your question as my op was from last november. Well after I asked my question I went to the bird vet and he didn't know what was wrong but said it may have been congenital. He gave me an antobiotic called Septrin to feed the chick twice a day and some Lactulose to feed at every feed time, just a tiny drop like 0.01 mls. I also fed electrolyte when the crop slowed down.Anyway the up shot is baby got better and now she is nearly 7 months old is very very cuddly and I named her Phoebe.
Guess what? Two weeks ago I found a cold abandoned egg in Phoebe's parents nest box. I candled it and there was a chick inside so I put it in the incubator and he/she hatched on Tuesday, 4 days ago. I had to assist the hatch because the membrane was stuck to chick and he/she couldn't turn around to 'unzip' the egg.
Baby is doing fine and is putting on weight nicely and no tummy problems so far.
I hope your chick is ok as it was over 2 months ago you asked your question. I'm sorry I didn't see it when you posted it and been of some help.
Hope your chick turned out ok.

Thankyou Tracie, I appreciate you getting me those links. This is my first baby, I have 11 parrots but they are all adults. I'm worrying over everything with this chick , I feel like an over anxious mother with a new born human baby!! Plus I have been feeding him every 2 to 3 hours day and night! So not had any sleep for a week (he/she is 7 days old now. Last night he slept through the night so I got about 6 hours sleep, thank goodness.
