What type of bird do I own?

by Miriam Rampersad

Hello I own a 9 month old pet parrot, I know that it is intelligent, but I cannot figure out what breed of parrot is it. Also why is it not talking. It has the body of a hahn's mini macaw but not the head. Could you answer both my questions. I have been searching so many sites and cannot seem to find my answer. I believe it came from Venezuela.

Thank you so much in advance.

Looks to me like you have a White Eyed Conure!! Great birds they are, can be a bit loud, but when the time is right they seem to choose to speak rather than screech...he will speak when he is ready, but always keep in mind just because you have a bird that is known to talk, doesnt always mean he will. Each bird is different!

He could be a Half Moon Conure. He is a Conure of some kind, so do your searching on the smaller species of Conures.

Also, he is not talking because he does not feel like talking. Birds do not talk on command, nor are they little talking toys who learn to talk immediately. They learn to talk much as a human child would, by listening, attempting to imitate and practicing a lot. They are also self-conscious about practicing where you can hear them, so he may be working on some words when you are not around.

If you have not already, please take him to be examined by an Avian Vet as he may have an infection of some kind which will make him less likely to play, sing and talk. If you have not had him long, he is still adjusting to his new environment. He will also be learning whether or not he can trust you. Trust is earned with parrots and not freely given. Make sure he is eating a high quality diet of organic pellets, and there are several kinds on this site. Harrison's is a very good one and comes Avian Vet endorsed. I've been feeding it to my Amazons for many years and they stay healthy and have healthy skin and feathers. Here is a link on how to go about changing from a poor quality diet of seeds to organic pellets:

Before starting an dietary changes, be sure and have your bird thoroughly examined by an Avian Vet.

Thanks for writing,

No you don't have a mini macaw. That bird is different in a lot more ways than just the head. You have a mealy amazon.

Why is it not talking? What are you doing to teach him to talk, how long have you had him for? These birds are not instant talkers. They take a lot of time & patients from their owner to teach them to talk. He is only 9 months old so he is still a baby & may not start to talk until 1 to 2 years old, if YOU teach him during that time.

Not all birds will talk because not all of them are interested in talking. So if you bought this bird just because it supposed to talk then you need to do some serious googling about the proper care of these birds. There is a lot more to them than talking that you will need to know.
