whining Amazon

I have an 8 week old double yellow headed male Amazon parrot. He whines a lot when we approach or try to pet his head. Is he complaining, telling us he does not want us near?

whining Amazon is being hand fed
by: Lenore

Thank you for you comments but my 8 week old Amazon parrot is being hand fed by me 3 times a day. He is eating well and gives clear signals when he does not want any more of his baby hand feeding formula. He seems to be a very vocal baby. My question is only about the whining sound. I am uncertain whether to respect his not wanting to be bothered and leave him alone when he whines or take the philosophy that says he should do whatever you want him to at this age so he is not aggressive later. What I mean by "do whatever I want" is to have him step up or have his head rubbed or file his nails. Which approach to take seems to border a fine line.

Amazon babies are not even weaned until around 3 months which would be 12 weeks of age. What he is telling you is that he is a baby, wants to be fed properly like a baby should be fed, and that he is possibly sick.

My strong recommendation for you is to get him into be examined by an Avian Vet immediately. A baby this young should still be eating baby parrot handfeeding formula with a syringe since the weaning process is started at about 3 months. Have the Avian Vet weigh him, do some routine bloodwork like CBC, WBC and Kidney, Liver and Thyroid Panels to see what his organs look like. If you have him on an all seed diet, he is not eating anything but junk food and babies's bones, skin, feathers and the rest of them cannot form and grow properly without the right kind of food.

He needs to be eating an organic, high quality pellet like Harrison's along with only 15-20% organic veggies recommended on the package. If avian vet finds him to be underweight, you may have to go back and finish handfeeding him. Why a breeder or pet store would sell a baby not yet weaned to people who don't know how to feed him is beyond my understanding.

Here is a link to article written by Avian Vet on how to go about changing from seeds to organic pellets, and the Harrisons' is found here. He wuld be eating the Course Grind because he's a bigger bird:

BEFORE making any changes in diet make sure he has been thoroughly examined by an avian vet in your driving area. The whining is either an indication of sickness or starvation, so please take this message seriously. He's doing his best to get you to really SEE him, so please do so.

Thanks for writing because your question may save your bird's life if you act on above advice.

8 week old parrot
by: Anonymous

You say you have an 8 week old parrot... But forgot to mention if you are hand feeding the bird. If not, he is whining because he is HUNGRY and is starving to death without hand feeding formula. Amazon parrots can take months to wean and at only 8 weeks of age he should probably still be on 2-3 feedings a day.... You must learn the needs of a parrot, especially a baby parrot before purchasing!!!!!! Poor little guy :-( get this bird checked out by an avian vet RIGHT AWAY if u have no idea what you are doing!
