In my experience with new birds, they seem to go through a "honeymoon" stage. They don't know you well enough to know what they can get by with, so they tolerate you at first. Then they test the boundaries after that.

As Linda said, it is always best to take the birds to an avian vet first, if they have not been in the last year.

We have some training material on our Parrot Training page that might be helpful to you. There are also some bird health articles too. Even though some are geared to conures or other birds, the training methods are the same for your bird.

If you haven't already, you need to take bird into Avian Vet to be checked for infections or other physical problems. All new birds have to be examined by avian vets during the first few days to a week from time they are brought home. Birds in pet stores are usually already sick with something they caught from all the other birds or from humans in stores. So, before beginning any kind of training you have to rule out physical causes for this behavior. Birds are also scared of various things in their new homes and need to be talked gently to, cleaned, fed and watered and given a chance to get used to their new environment before too much handling. This sounds like bird may not feel well, so make sure avian vet takes a look see soon.
