White feather

by Kerry

My almost 3 years old hahns macaw has a white feather growing on his back just above his tail feathers, I have no idea why this is because whenever his feathers are first growing in they are either grey or green and this is a pure white feather. Does this mean something or is this normal?

Thank you so much for clarifying that this is an oil gland. I thought it was an abnormal growth.

Thanks Anonymous. After I posted I looked further and found that it was exactly that. Well having had birds on and off for 30 years I never knew about it!

Oil gland

After posting on several places I found out it's an oil gland to help them preen their feathers, don't panic it's fine!

Same thing with my hahn's

I've just discovered the exact same thing and in same place with my 18 month hahns. I was looking it up and came across your post. Did you find out anything definitive about it? It does look and feel strange. Pure white beside the grey downy feathers coming out a stub of skin. I was wondering about taking him to the vet.

White feather suddenly appearing

I don't think it means anything, as far as something dangerous. It is probably just an aberrant feather.
