Parrot Odors!
by: Anonymous

Hi there,

We have two parrots, one is a Sun Conure and one is an Indian Ringneck. First REGARDLESS of sickness or NOT, you should take your Quaker to an AVIAN. They will rule out sickness and all. Secondly, your BIRD can pick up many odors even from cooking! My parrots take lots of baths on their own but when they slack a few days, I find that one or both may smell like food. They are very far from my kitchen but sometimes, when I cook some heavy spanish dishes, they will take on the smell, just like if you walked into a place with strong odors, you leave with a smell on ya. lol. It happens alot. Wash the hands, it is safer for them anyway and get EVERYONE to follow those steps. Even sometimes from KISSES your bird will take on the breath smells! YIKES!

Why dose my Quaker parrot smell really weird?!?!

Your bird needs to be examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area. The reason for this exam is he may have some kind of infection that is causing these smells. What you have to remember is hamburgers, hot dogs and other types of meat are made from dead animals, and anyone eating these items on a regular basis also smell bad though they don't even realize it. Birds feathers also pickup house smells. You mentioned water, and if your water is polluted, your bird and you are being poisoned everytime you drink it. Have water tested to see what is in there. Birds and fish are very sensitive to pollutants and high mineral contents in water, so have it tested. We use an under the sink reverse osmosis system provided by Culligan Water people, and we rent it so maintenance is taken care of by them. These companies will come out and test water for free, so get your water tested right away.

Birds do not sweat except through their mouths like dogs and cats. They pant when hot to help cool themselves but have no sweat glands.

I would have him examined by an Avian Vet and have them do some basic bloodwork to see if there are any problems with thyroid, kidneys or liver. He could have an infection, so have them test for both bacterial and viral infections. Some birds become "carriers" of various viral diseases, which may not make him sick, but could have something to do with how he smells.

Also parrots can not eat any kind of meat products which include all kinds of meat, poultry, fish and very much egg food. Feed your bird organic pellets like Harrisons found here because they provide 100% nutrition and will keep your bird healthy for a lifetime. Feeding this and that causes serious problems with bird's health, and they need to be eating a food made especially for them that is of the highest quality. All seed diets cause serious malnutrition problems resulting in sickness and death way before their time.

Quaker smells weird

This was answered a few days ago: http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/my-quaker-parrot-smells-weird.html

It could also be that you are eating these foods, not washing your hands, then holding the bird so that the bird smells like your dirty hands.

Hopefully you don't feed your bird human food that is full of chemicals and sugar, so that would not be the cause.
