Why has my Timneh started crying?

by Kimi
(Lansing, Michigan)

We have 2 Timneh African grey parrots, Teancum, a 7 yr old male and Abigail, a female just over a year old. About 2 weeks ago the Abigail started becoming aggressive towards the Teancum. She started pecking at him for no reason. Now Teancum won't come out of the cage hardly. She also started this baby bird hungry crying thing.

I was wondering if these changes in behavior are because we changed their diet. They were on a brand that was mostly seed and now they are on pellet and cooked/ fresh food diet. Abigail started the baby cry when we started feeding her the cooked food by hand also. Could see have regressed to wanting to be hand fed again? Why the aggression towards the other bird? Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Kimi

Why has my Timneh started crying?

Please separate the birds immediately before one or the other or both are injured.

Set up two cages that are close to each other so birds can see each other, and be very careful to be on hand when they are outside cage or just let one at a time out.

Your younger bird is fully weaned, and this sounds more like she is sick than anything else. Both birds will need to be taken to be examined by an Avian Vet ONLY because infections are highly contageous meaning both birds will have the same thing.

If the female is sick, then she's also infected the male, and both are not themselves, so please don't delay taking them to a licensed and trained Avian Vet.
