Why wont my parakeet eat from his bowl?

I just got a beautiful blue parakeet from a rescue center about 4 days ago. He is already trained. He knows "step up", he will eat out of your hand, and you can pet him. He seems very healthy other than not eating from his food bowl. He'll eat from your hand but not his bowl. Please help! Thank you for your time.

Parakeet won't eat from bowl

Try not feeding the bird from your hand for a day, and you will see the bird will eat from the bowl. Count out the pellets so that you can see how many it ate.

We only feed our birds their pellets in the morning, and they don't get their seed or treats until most of the pellets are gone. They act like they are NOT going to eat their pellets some days, then around 7pm we stir the pellets in the bowl while telling them, "you had better eat up so you can get your treats" and low and behold they eat their pellets!!

They are just hoping we will give them their seed so they can skip the healthy stuff. ;-) They don't do this every day, but several times a week. Healthy birds are not going to starve themselves if food is around.

If you are only feeding seed, then measure the seed, put white paper towels or something under the poop grate so you can see what food fell and make sure the bird is pooping. You will find by the end of the day that the bird WILL eat.

If you need to convert your bird to pellets so it doesn't die of fatty liver disease or something, then below are two articles that you can read to help you convert. Pick the method you are most comfortable with.
