Will my husbands cockatoo scream less if we get her a friend/mate? He works out of town alot lately and I do not take her out as much, as she dislikes me. She seems so lonely.

Parrot Companion

We have a Sun Conure that screams if we leave her alone too long, even though she is spoiled and stays out of her cage most of the day, but of course I keep her in a safe zone with eyes on her as I move about. I just feel that they are all flock birds, they should be purchased in pairs. I made that mistake and so now my conure calls all of us. She learned to speak well just to be able to communicate with us. lol. Loneliness can teach you to go the extra mile! lol. I do believe that the noise can double up though and the work of maintaining them. You have to make sure that you have a relationship with that bird before you consider bringing another one in or you will have TWO ENEMIES! lol. Our bird loves all of us, she talks and has equal time with everyone. I think I am her favorite though. lol. But yes, first build a bond, then consider another bird if you want a companion for both you and your bird, but not just for your bird. They can get into the new bird and not want anyone else too! More biting and less contact. YOU DONT WANT THAT AT ALL. Believe me! Good luck..

Cockatoo screaming, need a friend?
by: Tracie

It may help some, but you may just have two screaming birds. ;-)

It is best to only get another bird if YOU want the bird, not for the other bird. First off, they may hate each other, you still have to have two cages to clean, twice the avian vet bills and twice the noise. Also, these birds live so long that most people have to have someone in their will to take them when they go into a nursing home or pass on.

The best thing for you to do would be to read some of our training material on our Parrot Training page and maybe purchase some training dvd's or something so that you can have a relationship with the bird and teach it another behavior besides screaming.
