Worried about my 3 parrots catching Air Sac Mites from new Canary

by Saundra
(CT)

A Pet store gave me 2 canaries recently. One is bouncing around his cage. One is moving around a little to eat, and drink, but it makes a sqeaking sound all the time. I thought maybe it was young but in reading on the internet it seems it may be Air Sac Mites.
I am concerned that I have now contamintated my 2 African Greys, and my Quaker by bringing these canaries into my home.

Can the Air Sac Mites travel to the other birds by just being in the same room? Without any of them sneezing or sharing food/water?

Hopefully I can get this bird to the vet asap, like tomorrow.
Thanks for your feedback in advance.
Very Concerned Mamabird.

Bird possible air sack mites
by: The Avian Vet

This sounds like a a respiratory infection, or maybe air sac mites. There are other possibilities too. So I recommend that you take your bird in to see an avian veterinarian.

Another Update
by: Anonymous

The little guy whom I call Tangerine is feeling better. He now chirps on and off during the day (sounds like a cricket). Moving around a bit more. The other which I call Flitter moves all over the cage chewing on everything. He loves to look at himself in the mirror.
Both enjoy steamed broccoli immensely. Have tried other veggies (carrots, baby corn, snap peas, celery) but broccoli and apple seem to be it so far for them.
Very happy I will soon have two healthy canaries.

I would suggest anyone purchasing a canary from a pet store to take them to the vet asap just to make certain they are healthy and will live their full happy lives.

Update to Sick Canary
by: Saundra

Took both canaries to the vet yesterday. One has a respiratory infection, the poor thing. The good doctor is having me give him Vibramycin 2 times a day for seven to ten days. But said the other is fine, don't give it to him at all. We are hoping it's not Microplasma which can spread to both myself and the other birds.
Today he's sneezing a bit. Last night they both enjoyed steamed broccoli but didn't touch the steamed carrot. I have heavy towels around his cage to keep him warm. He's a gorgeous orangy yellow color, and only 1 year old. I do hope the little guy gets better soon.
