yellow nape baby quiet

When should I expect my baby Yellow Nape to start squawking? He is 10 weeks old and very quiet, only growls a bit if scared.

Sickness is one reason for being too quiet as babies are usually very active and vocal at this age. The other reason is he's not getting either enough to eat or the right kind of food. At 10 weeks, Amazon babies are still being handfed baby parrot handfeeding formula with a syringe or spoon depending on which you have experience with. The spoon will cause baby to have gas pockets in crop, so the syringe is recommended way to feed. Amazons are not started fully on the weaning process until they are 3 months or 12 weeks old. So, your baby may be needing at least a 60cc syringe in the morning and another one at night. If he is eating pretty good just not enough to be well fed, then one in the morning or at night would work. He needs to be weaned onto high quality organic pellets like Harrisons, carried here. There is NO need to start him on all seed diet as this is almost valueless as for proper nutrition and many problems develop from feeding these low quality diets. Start him out right, and he'll really blossom into a happy, healthy active little bird. Keep him on all seeds and get ready for the avian vet bills to start piling up because they will.

I recommend you take your bird to an Avian Vet in your driving area, have him checked for infection which is very common with babies and get a weight on him to see if he is underweight. The infection, if he has one, will kill him as babies have no immune system to speak of at these young ages.

Hope this helps, and let us know what the Avian Vet has to say about all of it. The Amazons can live up to 75 years, so you need to get him started off right at the beginning so his life is of high quality and enjoyable for him and you.
