Yellow tail feather tips for my tangerine ringneck dove

by Kiran
(London, Ontario, Canada)

Hi, I have 2 tangerine ringneck doves that I just noticed that the tips of their tails are yellow in colour.
Should I be worried?
They were never yellow before.
Or could it just be because the vitamins that I normally put in their water is yellow in colour, and so if their tails touch the water it may turn the tips a little yellow?

New Question
by: Kiran

Hi Dr.,
One of my doves I've just noticed since Friday has been constipated 3 times since Friday and struggles to go. They have a constant, clean, supply of grit. I change it every 4 days or if they have accidentally soiled it. Also they have a constant, clean supply of water. It is changed daily. Also, this one (Riley) has not moved from the nest box for the past 3 weeks almost. Could that be a possible reason....that she needs to be forced to be more active!?!

Is there anything I can do or give her to help her go off without struggling so much. Because it's just heart-breaking for me to hear her struggling like that and see her struggling so much to just poop.

Please please give suggestions on ANYTHING I can do to help her or ANYTHING I can buy for her to help her.

Editor's note: If you want people to see and answer, you need to post a question, not an answer here to another question, at Parrot Questions

You will need to Find an Avian Vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

Yellow tail feather tips
by: Tracie

Yes, you need to take your birds to an avian vet if removing the vitamins from water doesn't help, since Dr B said it could be from illness.

Thank you
by: Kiran

Thank you so much dr b.
I will stop putting vitamins in the water immediately.
And yes they have constant clean supply of grit available.
I will go buy them some pellet food too.
Should I be taking them to a vet for this or no?

Vitamins in bird water may cause bacterial infections
by: The Avian Vet

Yes it may be the water staining the tail. It could also happen with a dirty cage, especially if the birds have changes in their droppings like diarrhea or bile staining (likely from illnesses).

I recommend that you not put vitamins in the water. These are not effective and can lead to health problems like bacterial infections. You should feed some pellets to provide complete nutrition. Make sure that you provide grit, too.
