Young male Rosella is tame but gets real aggressie when im doing anything in his cage

by Emily
(Australia)

Hi, i recently hand raised 5 eastern rosellas all were very tame until they started flying so we isolated the youngest so we could care for him and also tame him a lot. He was fine until he also started flying and we were advised to trim wings to help training etc which we did.

Even before we trimmed his wings he was showing some signs of aggression, and hasn't changed. For example if put my hand in his cage to change food/water or even look at him while his in there, he will become agitated and bob his head and fluff his wings out and make a little noises at me if I get to close or anything he will seek my hand out to physically attack. He also bites occassionaly he has latched onto ear lobes and fingers seemingly out of the blue he will jst attack. I love him but am struggling to understand his behaviour. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thankyou.

Bird attacks when hands in cage
by: Tracie

Many birds become territorial, our birds decided we were not allowed in their cage either. You just have to open the door and allow the bird to come out on it's own before messing with anything inside the cage.

You might see if cages with feeder doors are available in Australia and attach a Lixit water bottle, then you only have to put your hands in the cage when changing out toys or cleaning the cage.

You can put the birds on their play stand or allow them to be with a family member when you are cleaning their cage.
