Zebra-Finch (Not an emergency)

by Karen
(Pennsylvania )

I came home one day and my zebra finch's leg was twisted. she had a little pink thing (they put it on the birds at pet store. diff colors, but mine was pink), Its was around her left leg. It was bleeding..and two days later I decided to take it off carefully because I saw that shes was in pain, and I removed her from the cage because there were more birds and I read on the Internet that they tend to pick on weaker cage-mates. Then I put her in a cage alone.

So then I decided to rap something around to try and make it straight. I JUST put it on..I'm going to leave it there so her little leg gets used to having it how its suppose to be. Hopefully after a couple of days, when i take it off..it will be straight and she'll try to move her fingers (or toes I don't know) and her leg will be back to normal. I'm also going to give her maybe if I find something for bones, or well something that might help her leg, I will give it to her, make sure its approved and yea.

So, I want to know if this will be OK, because I asked about taking her to a vet and it costs 105$ JUST for them to check whats wrong. PLUS what they have to do. Its too much money. Hopefully you can help. Also another question, its that shes been acting a little weird today. She opens her tail feathers like a peacock and stays there. And before that I saw her !plop! and then now she's acting a little weird. Please answer my two questions as soon as possible. Its not an emergency, just I want to know soon, to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Thank you.

Thank you for your help. But on Friday. When I posted that, On Saturday,I found her..not moving. I knew that since she had started acting weird, something bad was going on. I did notice that a lot of blood was lost. It may have been that. And when I took of the thing I put on her leg. It was broken. So she passed away on Saturday. Thank you for your help anyways.

This IS an emergency as the bird has probably broken her leg. you have to take her to an Avian Vet immediately or risk losing her.

You are not a doctor nor a vet nor even a nurse, so you have no idea what has happened here, and it sounds like a broken leg which has to be immediately set and casted or it will cause your bird horrible pain and stay crooked. This pain will last the rest of her miserable life.

If you have birds, you also have to be able to take them to an Avian Vet when injured or sick. The Avian Vet goes along with having birds just like feeding high quality diets, putting them in decent cages and so on.

They will sometimes set you up with a payment plan, but you won't know until you go there, have your bird properly taken care of and talk with them about it.

please do this as quickly as possible as she is in a great deal of pain.
